Terminology Work
Sound terminology work in the source language is an important prerequisite for high-quality translations. Usually, technical writers and terminologists are responsible for this task in a company.
The following data should be recorded and maintained for a concept:
- Definition (concise explanation, e.g. of a technical component)
- Term (binding denomination, e.g. "engine block")
- Synonyms (documentation of unwanted synonyms, e.g. "engine-block")
- Source (source of the term)
- Status (release by authorized person)
Depending on individual requirements, other data has to be recorded as well. An important factor is a well-planned concept for terminology work and its systematic implementation. The introduction of a functioning system and recording of basic terms are tedious and difficult processes at the beginning – but it is worth it!
Advantages of consistent terminology work:
- The binding assignment of one term to a concept simplifies inhouse communication. If various terms exist (e.g. for different departments such as Marketing and Research), they can be recorded in a database and looked up easily.
- Accurate definitions prevent misunderstandings and wrong use of terms.
- The creation of a consistent Corporate Language is possible.
- Translations which have been carried out with a Translation Memory System become less expensive due to more 100 % matches of translation units.
- Last but not least, the translation quality improves, i.e. less corrections and better legal security.
CONDOK gladly advises you on monolingual and multilingual terminology work within your company. For translation-related terminology work we mainly use "TermStar" by STAR AG and "MultiTerm" by SDL.
