S1000D^TM is a very complex specification, which covers various fields of technical documentation. Consequently, it makes no sense to know all details of it if you only need to know a small part of it for your requirements. Technical draftspersons have other training requirements than technical writers or project leaders, who have to write project-specific guidelines or have to evaluate the consequences for possible extra costs.

Duly training avoids unnecessary delays and costs.

Business Rules

S1000D^TM does not cover all necessary regulations for the uniform production of data. For this reason, a National Style Guide (NSG) for the S1000D^TM system of the German Federal Armed Forces exists. This document provides regulations for the uniform production of data and the correct display of them.

These further regulations, however, do not suffice to actually start the project. Another project-specific guideline e.g. a Guidance Document (GD) must be used to determine how data is produced in the corresponding project.
