S1000DTM with GRIPS

The DTDs of S1000DTM consist of very complex structures and are difficult to comprehend at first glance. Each S1000DTM data module consists of a status and a content part. The status part contains status information like DMC, language, version, security level, etc. and must be completed for every data module.

The implementation of the S1000DTM directive requires comprehensive training in the complex subject matter and careful consideration of the prescribed specifications. An information management system like GRIPS supports the technical writer such that he or she can concentrate on the most important part of the documentation: the content.

Modularization of information makes the retrieval of existing units of information easier, but due to the large number of data modules it is easy to get confused too. The navigation matrix of the GRIPS system resolves this problem. By establishing a hardware and an information axis for filing the device and information structure, the desired unit of information can be selected with a single mouse click, nothing will be lost, and everything can be found easily.

When typing in data module codes (DMC) or illustration control numbers (ICN) manually, typos are made easily. Such faults entail that the corresponding cross-reference (hyperlink) of the IETM is not correct and does not function. GRIPS solves this problem and supports the technical writer: Cross-references are inserted by mouse click and the link information is accepted automatically by the system. Linked information is monitored and cannot be deleted inadvertently.
