The History of S2000M and Its Purpose
The concept for S2000M was developed in 1976 by the AECMA (Association Européenne des Constructeurs de Matériel Aérospatial), now merged into the ASD (Aero Space and Defence Industries Association of Europe). Unlike in civil aviation, there was no standardization in the military field. Each air force applied a different national specification.
It was also common practice to use a specially developed procedure for each aircraft project.
This meant that different procedures were used simultaneously all the time. This resulted in ever growing problems and increasing costs for industry and military procurement. In June 1981 an international conference was held in Paris, it was agreed to search for possibilities to create a harmonized specification for military and civil purposes on the basis of ATA 200. In 1984 aviation companies and the related industry all over the world created the "Specification 2000" by adapting the "Specification ATA 200".
Although ATA 200 and the subsequent "Specification 2000" of AECMA served as the basis of harmonization efforts, the different military objectives and requirements did not permit the adoption of the civil specification for military use.
