The History of S1000DTM and Its Purpose

AECMA

S1000DTM was originally developed by the AECMA (Association Européenne des Constructeurs de Matériel Aérospatial). AECMA was an alliance of several European aviation companies and was later joined by many organizations and national ministries and authorities (e.g. the German Federal Ministry of Defense).

The growth in international cooperative projects during the seventies and eighties called for the unification of documentation methods. Several committees and teams of the AECMA developed S1000D.

ASD

Today, the AECMA merged into a new organization, the ASD. ASD is a merger of AECMA, EDIG (European Defence Industries Group) and EUROSPACE (Association of the European Space Industry). The group TPSMG (Technical Publications Specification Maintenance Group) of ASD and AIA is responsible for the development and maintenance of the directive. While S1000DTM was initially only intended for the aviation industry, its provisions are now also applied in an adapted form to other areas of technology, both in military and civil projects.
