S1000D^TM Guidelines

The directive contains general and specific rules for the production of technical regulations:

• Writing rules for English (Simplified Technical English), illustration rules, alteration service, quality assurance etc.
• Use of specific markup languages and data formats, e.g. SGML and CGM
• Different DTD types for different information types, e.g. with descriptive or procedural character
• A standard numbering system for coding devices and procedures
• Modularization of information in form of data modules (DM), alphanumerical coding of data modules via the data module code (DMC)
• Alphanumerical coding of illustrations via the illustration control number (ICN)
• Use of a common source database (CSDB) as central storage and management medium for the information units
• Data exchange between institutions participating in the project
• Determination of various publication types for description, maintenance, trouble shooting, etc.
• Determination of various output formats
